Grinding a lathe bed is not a singular operation! It will most likely require rescraping and alignment of the headstock, carriage and tailstock. As for a gap, forget it. The beds with a removeable section are a poor excuse for a gap bed lathe anyway. The bed is cut in half horizontally and sliding ways are provided so that the whole top of the bed can be slid back (usually with a hand crank) from the chuck, revealing the gap. That way the joggle ricghie mentions doesn't get in there.
